Heroes = Michelle Payne

This term for topic we had to individually (or in pairs) complete a Hero injury. We had to follow the inquiry of deciding, finding, using, recording and presenting. We also had to make sure that they were a hero of social change. 

At the start we had to research a few heroes to choose from, choose the best one, then think of 6 target questions we want to find out about our chosen hero. 

Once that has been completed, we had to answer our questions. 

I chose my hero to be Michelle Payne.

RWC (Rugby World Cup) Research

Earlier this year, we had to choose 2 topics (to do with the RWC) out of a list to research. Mia and I completed this task together and we researched the History of the Rugby World Cup and the William Webb Ellis Cup. I enjoyed completing this activity and thought that we worked well together. 

What to do in an earthquake and/or tsunami

Earlier this term, our school participated in the nationwide Shake Out which is a earthquake drill followed by a tsunami drill. After this had finished we came back to class to create a DLO about what to do before, during and after in a natural event like this (especially when we are at school). 

Taku Akomanga (My Classroom)

This week for topic (Te Reo Maori) we have been looking at Taku Akomanga (My Classroom). There was a list of Maori words down the sides and we had to copy and paste the English translation beside them from the word bank. I knew the majority of them however a couple my classmates gave me some assistance. I find it quite interesting that everything you use to write with starts with pene! 

Animals At War - ANZAC

This week at school, Totara 2 is learning about ANZAC Day. For this topic we had to choose two sub-topics to learn about. I have chosen to do Animals At War and I have started Life At Home. Along with that we had to read eight journal stories relating to the war and write down three facts we learnt about each story. 

Country Study Shared Lunch

On Thursday last week we had our country study shared lunch where we baked/cooked a famous meal from our country. Seeing as my country was Northern Cyprus I made a dessert called 'ladies fingers'. The dessert is 2 pieces of flaky pastry with whipped cream and jam in the middle. It also has a meringue paste on top. In Cyprus they are also called Daktyla Kirion.

Here is a recipe for the Ladies Fingers:

Daktyla Kirion/Ladies Fingers

Makes 16

Ingredients:

• Puff Pastry - 2 sheets (8 rectangles)
• Egg whites - 2
• Icing Sugar - around ½ cup
• Jam for filling - to serve
• Cream - 1 cup (whipped)

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180 - regular bake.
2. Cut 8 rectangles out of the pastry and put in the fridge. (Good pastry is cold pastry in a hot oven.)
3. While the oven is heating up beat 2 eggs until stiff peaks form. Add a little bit of icing sugar at a time until the mixture forms a sort of paste.
4. Put the icing sugar mixture into the fridge to cool while the pastry cooks.
5. When the oven is heated, bring the pastry rectangles out of the fridge and coat all of them with the icing sugar paste. Put them on an oven tray and cook for around 10-15 minutes or until they look cooked.
6. While they are cooking whip 1 cup of cream.  
7. Bring out of the oven once cooked and place on cooling rack. Cut them in half horizontally and fill with whipped cream and jam.
8. Serve and ENJOY!

Country Study

For topic the first half of the term we have been doing 'Country Study'. The teachers randomly selected a country for each student and we had to follow the criteria and present our study in whatever way we wanted. This had to be presented by week 5! The country that I was given was Northern Cyprus. In the end I presented mine in a binded book (information booklet). Here is a link to the docs I printed off to put in my booklet! 

Bees

For our science topic lesson for Garden to Table we have been looking at bees in our gardens. We had to answer the following questions: What is the importance of bees?, What do they pollinate?, and What plant attracts bees to your garden?

Food Pyramid

Over the past couple of weeks we have been looking at some things about fruit and vegetables. Today we have created our own food pyramids including some of our favourite foods. 

Matariki & Cyber Smart Reflection W7 T2

On Thursday Madeline came in and taught us about how important our blogs are. We had to go on to this website called 'Canva' and share our information that we found out.

For topic we are learning about Matariki. We had to listen to two videos and then write down the story in any type of presentation that we wanted.

Term 1 Week 1 Reflection

This week for literacy we have been doing a lot of things around plastic. For one of the activities we had to write down in a doc what we already know about plastic. The other activity was to read a book called 'Plastic Fantastic' so that we can do another activity soon also about plastic.

We had to write (on a padlet) what we think our topic was going to be about. The only clue was 'Explorer'.
Once we had completed the padlet activity we had to get into a group and create a goggle drawing. Everyone had to write a reason why people explore. All the reasons had to be different.

Topic

For topic this week we had to have 5 Olympic activities completed. This week I started and finished 3 activities which were a NZ 

Paralympian profile, an inspirational story about someone that has competed in the Olympics before and a Compare and Contrast activity where you had to write what things were different in the ancient Olympics and what things were different in the Modern Olympics. 

It was a bit tricky trying to write the Inspirational Story because you had to write it in your own words. The Compare and Contrast sheet was a bit tricky as well because you had to find lots and lots of information.

I learnt lots about the Olympics and some of the NZ 2016 Athletes. The most interesting fact that I found out was that the Para-Athlete that I studied was blind and deaf. Here are some of the activities that I did.
