DAY 2 (A3) - Weird and Wonderful

For this activity we found out that cacti can survive on 3 millilitres of water each day. We had to find out how many millilitres of water cacti could survive on in a year. We had to show the final answer and explain how we worked it out.

  1. Kia Ora Reagan,

My name is Rachel and I am working on the Summer Learning Journey blogging programme. It is wonderful to see that you have joined the journey and that you are blogging with us again this summer. Allie mentioned to me that you also participated last year. Welcome back!

I hope that you are enjoying the journey and learning a lot as you go. We are certainly learning a huge amount about the environment and, particularly, about the New Zealand environments (water, air, land, etc.) by working on this programme. I can see from this activity that you have read our instructions carefully and done exactly what was asked. Awesome job!

I can also see that you got the answer exactly right - 1095 mls or 1.085 L. It really isn't a lot of water, is it? Like you, I find it hard to believe that a plant could survive on such a small amount of water but cacti are pretty unique and have evolved over many years to survive in harsh, dry conditions. Have you ever seen a cactus in real life? One of my friends actually bought me one as a gift a little while ago and I keep it in my office. It's pretty easy to take care of, given that it needs so little water!

Looking forward to reading more of your great posts when you have time to re-join the SLJ. In the meantime, have a lovely week with your family and friends!

    Best,
    Rachel :)

I was lucky enough to be able to see a cactus plant at my cousins house not long ago!

    2. Bula, Reagan! You were lucky. They are not that common here in New Zealand. I hope that you and your cousin are having a great summer.

Looking forward to reading more of your awesome SLJ posts over the coming weeks!

      Bye for now,
      Rachel :)

Your working out is clear and easy to follow. When I was your age (gee, I sound like my nana!), we were only taught how to do the algorithm like you have written on your drawing. I think the way you worked it out is much clearer and you understand what each stage means. Anyway, I think I should just get cacti at home for plants as I always forget to water them and only remember when I notice that they look at bit droopy. It was funny the other day when your sister saw some cacti plants at the shop and went to grab one because she thought they were fake. But they weren't!!

    Love Mum

I wish I was there when Millah went to touch the cacti plants! It's quite easy watering my cactus as if you forget to water it one day you can just water it a tiny bit more the next day! I love how this year there has been a maths activity every week because you know how much I like maths! Did you like algorithms in maths?
