(W2) DAY 3 (A3) - The Midnight Zone

In 2018, the staff at Te Papa moved the Colossal Squid to a new area in the museum. The Squid approximately weighs 500kg. We then had to pretend that a child can lift 15kg and an adult can lift 25kg. We had to used maths strategies to see how many adults and children it takes to lift the Colossal Squid!! There are many answers to this problem - can you think of a different one!

  1. Hi there Reagan,

Once again, fantastic work for telling us where you got your image from! You've done a great job of showing your working. Looks like we're going to need to find 14 strong adults and 10 strong children to help move this colossal squid to its new room at Te Papa. Do you think you would want to help? I think I would want to touch it, I would imagine it to be very slimy!

These colossal squids are unbelievably ginormous, aren't they?! It's crazy to think that we have such big creatures lurking in the depths of our oceans. The thought of it gets me a little nervous, how about you? Have you been to Wellington to visit the Te Papa museum before? I went there a few years ago and I was lucky to see the preserved colossal squid in real life. It was an extraordinary experience and I learnt so much about it from that one trip to the museum!

    Best,
    Evelyn :)

    1. Bonjour Evelyn,

I would want to help move the colossal squid as it would be a cool thing to say you had done - "I helped to move a colossal squid in Te Papa". Like you, I would like to feel the texture of it.
I think that it is wonderful to have such a huge and magnificent creature in our own country, New Zealand!
I have been to Te Papa twice. Both times I visited the war section and I loved seeing all of the huge and realistic wax soldiers and nurses!

      Noho ora mai,
      Reagan
