Yesterday and today Miss Hines read us two more passages from our class novel. We then had to complete another comprehension activity. These parts were quite sad as it was set just after the explosion happened. I would fell very anxious if this happened to my family as I wouldn't know if my Dad, Grandad, brother etc would come out of the mine alive.
Welcome to my blog, I'm a learner at Greymouth High School in Greymouth, New Zealand.

Pukeko Facts - The Mines' Afire
In the passage that Miss Hines read to us yesterday, Tommy went on a walk in the bush with his class. In the bush he found 4 different types of birds - pukeko, tui, wood pigeon and weka. We had to choose one of these birds to research and create a presentation about it. I chose to do the pukeko.
The Mines' Afire - #2
Yesterday Miss Hines read another passage of our class novel. She also made up a slide for us with 8 comprehension questions on it that we had to answer. Next time we read the book it will be set just after the disaster occurred!

The Mines' Afire - Pre Reading
For reading this term we are going to be reading 'The Mines' Afire' by Susan Battye and Thelma Eakin. This book is based around the Brunner Mine Disaster that happened in 1896, just 13kms from my home town. We haven't yet started reading the book however we read the Historical Notes to get a bit of an idea about the book. Miss Hines created a slide with questions (about the mine) on it that we had to answer.
Later this term we are going to be visiting the old Brunner Mine site.
