(W2) DAY 2 (A1) - Weaving a Tall Tale

For this activity we had to write down whether or not we would like to try flax weaving. We had to give a few reasons to support our opinion.

I knew you would choose to do flax weaving as you love learning...ANYTHING! I think we should go down the front and pick some flax and have a go at making a hat like the one that was made for us out of coconut leaf when we were in Fiji. It looked really easy but I bet when we go and try it, it will be VERY hard! People who have been weaving for years make it look very easy because they have done it so many times. I like how you have thought of the idea of making ketes to use as supermarket bags now that the supermarkets do not have plastic bags. Maybe you could start a business - I am sure they would be popular!

  2. Hello Reagan,

It's great to hear that you would like to try flax weaving! Weaving definitely takes a lot of time, patience and practice but it can be a very rewarding experience. Did you know that back in the day Māori could make baskets (kete) within a few minutes? You would have to be quite skilled to be able to work that fast. Flax weaving was very convenient for them because they could make a kete wherever and whenever they needed since flax is so widespread in New Zealand.

I love that you have shared some interesting information about the flax material as well as ideas on how we could make use of the finished products! Did you end up trying out some flax weaving with mum? Since you are interested in flax weaving, maybe you could start practising and see what kinds of brilliant and interesting creations you could come up with!

    Happy blogging,
    Evelyn :D

I haven't made anything with my Mum yet, however we probably will sometime in the future. We have a lot of flax out the front of our house so that's a good start! WOW! Imagine the pressure of trying to get the kete finished in just a few minutes! In Fiji, a man made a coconut leaf hat for us and it was very amazing how quickly he got it done and all the technical steps that are involved? Have you ever tried flax weaving before? If yes, what have you made?

    2. Hi there Reagan,

Seeing as you have access to flax right in front of your house, maybe you could try out some flax weaving with your family during the next holidays! :)
Wow, I would have loved to see that man at work, his fingers must have been moving so fast! Did you get to take the coconut leaf hat back home to New Zealand?
I have never tried flax weaving before but I have done paper weaving and I think it might be a little bit more tricky since you have to be very careful that you don't accidentally tear the paper, oops!

      Best,
      Evelyn :)
